FACS Mission Statement


Our mission:

Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FACS) helps prepare students for family life, work life, and careers in family and consumer sciences by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and vocational preparation.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education empowers individuals and families throughout their life to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global society. The challenges individuals face throughout their lives include balancing personal, home, family and work lives; acquiring marketable skills to be successful in life management, employment, and career development; promoting optimal nutrition and wellness; and managing resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families.

In today’s society there are more two-career families than ever before.  Family and Consumer Sciences can give individuals the practical knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse family, community, and work environments.

International Foods

Students will take an imaginary trip across the United States and around the world to learn culture, history, ingredients specific to the area and food preparation techniques.  Cultural foods such as Italian pastas, French desserts, Mexican Tapas, and American mainstays will be prepared.  A basic introduction to the kitchen and common tools will be discussed. 


Gourmet Foods

Grade Level:  9, 10, 11, 12

This course involves the preparation and serving of various foods.  Students will use basic kitchen equipment to prepare delicious dishes from appetizers to desserts.   Meal planning skills will be emphasized.   Basic food preparation, facts of baking and cake decorating will be taught. 


Advanced Gourmet Foods

Prerequisite:  Gourmet Foods

This course is intended for the student who is interested in learning gourmet cooking skills.  Students will learn how to “spice” up meals when preparing various desserts, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meat and poultry dishes to name a few.  Cake decorating and the construction of a gingerbread house will also be included. 


Nutrition for Fitness

This course is designed as a scientific exploration of the fundamentals of nutrition.  Topics will include the function and sources of the major and trace nutrients need to promote health and aid in disease prevention and treatment.  Students will learn about energy, metabolism, digestion, and absorption and transportation of nutrients.  By completing a computerized diet analysis on their current eating habits, students will learn how cultural influences affect nutrition status, and they will learn how to assess and improve their nutritional health.  Successful completion of this course can earn students college credits at Camden County Community College.


Culinary Arts I

Prerequisite:  Gourmet Foods, Advanced Gourmet Foods

This course will provide a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and scope of food preparation.  Students will prepare various dishes and meals with commercial preparations in mind.  They will learn proper presentation of foods using color and garnishing.  Quantity food preparations will be experienced as well.  Aspects of the food service industry will be explored. 


Culinary Arts II

Grade Level:  12
Prerequisite:  Culinary Arts I

This course is for the student who desires a career in Culinary Arts or wants to broaden his/her food preparation skills after the successful completion of the Culinary Arts I course.  The focus of this course will be the development of more challenging and sophisticated food preparation techniques.  Students will acquire an advanced level of skills in quantity food production and preservation, specialized food preparation, customer service, food safety, and entrepreneurship.  Emphasis will be placed on meal planning and diet evaluation.  Successful completion of this course can earn students college credits at Camden County Community College.


Interior Design
Length:  Year     Credit:  5
Grade Level:  9, 10, 11, 12

This course prepares students to make choices concerning their housing.  Areas of study include theories of design, architecture, color theory, furniture styles, how to purchase furniture, choosing accessories, and window, wall, and floor treatments.  Students will also complete projects that will enhance the beauty of their homes.  Students may be required to purchase project materials.


Clothing Construction I
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  9, 10, 11, 12

Students will learn the basic of clothing construction – operation of the sewing machine, fabric layout, cutting and sewing, and hand-stitching techniques. Individualized instruction in basic clothing construction skills is included.  No prior sewing skills needed!  Learn to use a commercial pattern while making pajama pants and a shirt, a reversible tote bag, and a project of your choice.  Students are responsible for providing project materials. 


Clothing Construction II, III, IV

Prerequisite:  Clothing Construction I

Students will build upon basic construction skills learned in Clothing Construction I.  Students can express their individuality and creativity through construction of hands-on projects.  Students choose their own projects -  two per marking period.  Students can learn to make quilts, dresses, handbags or whatever interests them.  Students are responsible for providing project materials.  


Life Skills & Relationships
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  9, 10, 11, 12

Life Skills and Relationships is designed to take students through all phases of life including relationships, child development and care, independent living, career planning and social skills for life.  This hands-on course allows students to experience practical skills for living which are essential components of this class.  A weekend with Baby Think It Over allows students to experience the inconveniences of infants. Students will create projects relevant to Life Skills.  Students are responsible for project materials. 


Child Development
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  10, 11, 12

This course is designed for students interested in child development as a future profession.  Additionally, the students will gain knowledge in sound parenting skills.  Students will study the stages of child development from ages four to six.  Actual experiences will be achieved by working one-on-one with children ages 2 ½ through 5 years old.  Students are required to prepare and develop lesson plans.  They will be expected to team teach the children in the on-site preschool every third week during the first semester and solo teach for approximately one week during the second semester.  Attendance is an important part of the course grade.  


Advanced Child Development 
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  11, 12
Prerequisite:  Child Development, Teacher Recommendation

The students will learn how to work with one to three year old children and examine the theories of child development.  They will be required to teach children, ages two through Pre-K in our on-site preschool.  Each student is expected to plan, develop and teach one lesson every other week throughout the course.  College credits may be awarded for this course upon successfully completing two years at Gloucester County College.  See your counselor for more information.


Woodworking Design & Production Technology
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  9, 10, 11, 12

This entry-level course will be the student’s first chance to get involved in the creative world of woodworking.  Students will be introduced to woodworking hand tools, equipment, and techniques necessary to produce innovative, practical, and quality products.  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the design loop and problem solving processes associated with the area of woodworking and production techniques.  Activities will involve real-life situations and problems that place the student in the roles of researcher, designer, fabricator, tester, and evaluator.  Emphasis is placed on the ability to find multiple solutions to problems.  The class will assume responsibilities of various divisions of a company, and a product will be chosen.  The class, acting as a “company,” will provide and market the product. 


Construction & Woodworking Techniques

Grade Level:  10, 11, 12

This course is designed as an introduction to the advancing world of construction and the art of woodworking.  It will not only offer the student the basics in woodworking, but cover a number of areas in construction such as masonry, drywall, electricity, and carpentry using both emerging building materials and techniques.  This course should prove to be an enjoyable and interesting experience with a great deal of hands-on activities and real-life problem solving.


Materials Technology & Advanced Woodworking

Prerequisite:  Construction and Woodworking Techniques

This course is an intermediate course in woodworking developed to expose students to the world of materials fabrication, craftsmanship, and the construction industry.  Students will plan and build individual and group projects utilizing all the concepts of the design loop process, incorporating problem solving techniques.  This course will also acquaint the student with the impacts, resources, and tools of technology, as well as an awareness of consumerism and related careers in a technical society. 

 

Furniture & Cabinet Making
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  12
Prerequisite:  Materials Technology and Adv. Woodworking

This is an advanced course in the art of woodworking.  Students will design, plan, and construct individual and group projects.  Experiences will be gained in the safe and proper use of all wood lab hand tools and equipment.  Both current and state of the art materials and practices will be emphasized throughout the course.


Automotive/Small-Engine Tune-Up
Length:  Year     Credits:  5
Grade Level:  10, 11, 12

This course is designed to provide the student with the skills necessary to do minor repairs on small two-cycle and four-cycle engines, automobile engines, and to perform a complete tune-up on these types of engines.  Safety is strongly emphasized.  This program will expose the student to the advantages of a career in the automotive industry.  More importantly, this type of education will allow students to be more informed when discussing mechanical problems with mechanics and dealers.


Automotive/Small-Engine Repair

Grade Level:  11, 12
Prerequisite:  Automotive Tune-Up

This course is designed to teach the processes of automotive diagnostics and repair of gasoline and diesel engines.  The classroom is equipped with state of the art engine diagnostic tools, computerized wheel alignment, and tire balancing equipment.  Automotive Repair students train on late model Ford and General Motors demo cars, preparing them for above entry-level positions in the automotive trades. 

Advanced Automotive/Small-Engine Repair

Prerequisite:  Automotive Repair

The Advanced Automotive Repair program covers all aspects of automotive repair of gasoline and diesel engines.  Areas to be covered will include:  engine, drive train, suspension, and brakes.  Electrical troubleshooting skills (ignition, chassis, instrument, heat, and air conditioning) are reviewed.  This third level course includes customer billing and job interviewing skills.  The Advanced Automotive Repair graduate leaves the program with not only a high level of mechanical aptitude, but with the organizational and leadership skills demanded by today’s automotive industry.
