News and Notes

2008 Season Review

The 2008 season was like a wild roller coaster ride for the players and coaches of the Lady Pioneers volleyball team. While expectations were tempered with the loss of eight seniors last season, the Lady Pioneers expected to be a competitive bunch looking to grow and mature as the season progressed. Both teams saw an overhaul of their rosters with six players having never played at the varsity level and six incoming freshman on the JV level. Challenges were certainly expected and they came early in the season after the teams started 0-4 and 1-3 respectively. While it was a low point for the team the one highlight from early in the season was the Tip-Off Tournament @ Moorestown High School. The Varsity squad played a terrific day of volleyball finishing 10-5 and in 4th place losing to eventual champion Rancocas Valley. Each player contributed and matured from the experience.

The Lady Pioneers waited until September 22 to claim their first victory and then reeled off another 3 wins to bring their record to 4-4. The varsity club was playing its best volleyball of the season and it was due in large part to the players on the court. Senior co-captain Noelle Hogan became an all-around player after only playing the front row last season. Her excellent service combined with her dominating play upfront led the Pioneers in most matches. Even when other teams tried to stop Noelle they had difficulty doing so. Senior co-captain Becky Basille also contributed to the teams success. After playing most of her volleyball career as a setter, Becky moved to libero and anchored the defense in the back row. Both players showed tremendous growth in their games and were the leaders on the court.

Two other Seniors played a big role as well. Lauren Boyton saw her first action as a varsity player and played terrific defense in the backrow. Her passing was a big part of Clearviews success, especially in the tournament. Along with Becky's experience, Lauren gave the backrow the depth necessary for success. Chris Moos also contributed through most of the season. Since she was one of the few players with varsity experience, her leadership proved invaluable to her teammates. A mid-season injury took her out of action for the rest of the season and her play was missed on the court.

The other members of the varsity team should also be noted. Kayley Dear and Alyssa Burton, both JV players last season, took over as setters for this year's varsity team. Even though they lacked experience they made great strides in their play all season long. As the team moves forward these two players will continue to improve their skills setting the ball to returning and new varsity players next season.

Danielle Cristino, Claire Alpaugh, Chelsey Hogan and Lauren Young also saw their first varsity action this year as well. Danielle moved from outside to middle and contributed greatly especially on the defensive front. Claire was asked to step-in for senior Chris Moos after her injury and didn't miss a beat. Chelsey Hogan played along side her sister Noelle providing a formidable front line and Lauren Young a first year player stepped right into a back row role alongside Lauren boyton and Becky Basille.

At mid-season the Pioneers had a 7-7 record and appeared to be heading towards another playoff run, however a late 4 match losing streak all but ended the teams hope of a third straight trip. The Lady Pioneers varsity team finished the season with a 9-15 record overall. The coaching staff is extremely proud of this group of terrific players!!!

Varsity Overall Record: 9-15
